They will see things that they probably don't want to see. This is not the place to take your girl friends for a gay bar experience. They're known for giving drink specials if you take your shirt off, but I have friends who have gone and just stripped down to their underwear and even more. Downstairs is a bar, upstairs is the dance floor.
It's a little dirty, but that's their thing. The Green Lantern: this is probably the most sexual gay bar in the city. It has two floors, both similar and popular. They're pretty popular for their 2 for 1 happy hours. It's more of a lounge, and they even have someone playing a baby grand piano there.
Like The Dirty Goose, they tend to cater to a more professional crowd. Number Nine: right around the corner from Trade. They cater to a more alternative or hipster crowd, or as alternative or hipster as DC can get. They have their bar right up front, then the space opens up, before a bunch of booths in the back, and a patio out back. Their gimmick is that they serve cocktails in pint glasses. Which, I don't know if you can open a dive bar intentionally, dive bars just happen, but whatever. Trade advertises itself as a gay dive bar. Nobody was hurt, and everything is fixed. It's become so popular that during Pride, they went over their capacity and the rooftop deck buckled. The first floor is a bar, second floor is the dining room, third floor is a great rooftop deck that recently expanded onto a neighboring rooftop. It caters more to a young thirties "bear-ish" crowd. Uproar: also one of the newer bars to open. And the third floor is their rooftop deck. The first floor finally opened, and it's more like a lounge. It tries to cater to a more professional crowd. The Dirty Goose: one of the newest gay bars to open in DC. The gay community has mostly moved on to other bars that have opened in the past few years. What use to be wall to wall gay men, now it tends to be less crowded, and about 50% women dancing. As the eastern end of U Street has gotten more popular, Nellie's has been invaded by droves of straight women. Nellie's has taken a nosedive in popularity with the gay community lately. Upstairs is the "roof", which used to be a rooftop bar, but a couple of years ago they added an actual roof over it due to complaints from neighbors, although they do have a couple of balconies. The food is actually pretty good bar food. Downstairs is the dining room with lots of TVs playing games. It advertises itself as a gay sports bar. Nellie's: used to be the most popular gay bar in the city. Cobalt is the top level, and is strictly a dance floor. 30 Degrees is more of a lounge, with a smaller dance floor. It's 3 floors, Level One is their restaurant, with the quality of the food depending on whoever they have as their head chef that month. It was popular, then waned in popularity, did a huge remodel, got the crowds back for a few years, and has again waned in popularity lately. It's sadly closing next year to build condos.Ĭobalt: it has had its ups and downs over the years. If you're not drinking, you'll fit right in there. Fridays they have Bear Happy Hour, a drag show, and it's also their 18 and up night.
They also opened up an amazing outdoor patio a couple of years ago. They do drag shows downstairs, dancing upstairs, which also has a quiet room to chill and chat. Town: by far the biggest gay club in the region.
Other posters touched on a couple of bars, but I'll give you a full breakdown of the DC gay bar scene: Ok, it really depends on what you're looking for.
